One of its lesser-known features is the ability to create custom rules for dynamically generating potential passwords. For instance, if you want to crack a password like "Password1", which has become common practice since Microsoft implemented "Password Complexity" globally, you can use John's built-in rule system. This allows you to modify your basic wordlists to include variations such as adding a capital letter at the beginning and a number (or symbol) at the end. To take advantage of this feature, you can run a command like: john 127.0.0.1.pwdump -wordlist=dictionary.txt -rules jumbo The "jumbo" rule set comes with John's community patch, which I highly recommend. This patch includes additional hash types, making John a more versatile tool. ![]() While Hashcat may be faster in some cases, I find John to be my go-to password cracker due to its simplicity and speed.
